When Doing the Right Thing Costs You

Pastor Brandon preached on Palm Sunday at Harvest Church in Conway, South Carolina.

God’s Presence Isn’t Comfort. It’s Companionship

There’s a version of faith we’re often handed that says:
Do the right thing, and everything will work out.

But real life doesn’t always follow that script.

Sometimes you tell the truth… and lose the opportunity.
You choose integrity… and it costs you the relationship.
You walk away from what’s wrong… and end up in a place that feels like loss instead of reward.

Joseph knew that kind of faith.

In Book of Genesis 39, Joseph does everything right. He resists temptation. He honors God. He refuses to compromise.

And it lands him in prison.

But the Lord was with Joseph…

Not before the hardship.
Not instead of it.
Right there in it.

The Truth We Don’t Always Say Out Loud

God doesn’t always remove the pressure.

He doesn’t always stop the pit.
He doesn’t always prevent the prison.

But He does stay.

God’s presence is not comfort. It’s companionship.

That changes everything.

Because suddenly, the question isn’t:
“Why is this happening to me?”

It becomes:
“Who is with me in it?”

Integrity Isn’t Loud. It’s Quiet.

Joseph’s defining moment wasn’t public.

It was private.

No applause.
No audience.
Just a decision.

How can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?

That’s what real integrity looks like.

Not fear of consequences.
Not concern for reputation.
Just a quiet, steady awareness of who you belong to.

Sometimes Holiness Looks Like Running

We love the idea of standing strong.

But sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is leave.

Joseph didn’t fight temptation.
He fled it.

And it cost him.

The proof of his obedience became the accusation against him.

That’s the kind of faith no one posts about.

But it’s the kind that forms something deeper.

The Gap

Growth in the Gap

There is often a gap between obedience and outcome… and in that gap, God is shaping your character.

There’s often a space between obedience and outcome.

A waiting room where nothing makes sense.

A stretch of road where it feels like you did the right thing… and everything got harder.

That gap?

That’s where God shapes you.

If You’re in That Place Right Now

If you’re in a season that feels like a prison…
If doing the right thing cost you more than you expected…

You’re not abandoned.

You’re not behind.

You’re not alone.

God didn’t skip the hard part.

He stepped into it with you.

Closing Thoughts

Joseph’s story doesn’t begin with promotion.

It begins with presence.

And maybe that’s the point.

Because faith was never about escaping the fire.
It was always about who stands with you in it.
